Introduction
The City sits on the very edge where time and space meet — So the popular saying goes.
According to its own history record, the City originated as part scientific outpost, part refugee camp. The Rift does not discriminate with what it pulls in — Or perhaps it is more accurate to say, it is where all things end up when they fall through the cracks between realities. Societies with the capability of traveling what would come to be called the Rift Sea would gather on this precipice of reality to rest, trade, and study the fabric of the universes. And when the truly unfortunate, those who slipped from the grips of their homeworlds and survived the strange, impossible Sea, would wash up out of the Rift...
Well. They didn't have anywhere else to go, and the researchers weren't so heartless as to leave them to fend for themselves. Over time, the population grew, along with its needs. A natural law of hospitality held the infinite cultures together — After all, every citizen and castaway understood, on a very personal level, the single universal truth.
In the face of the Rift, all are equally powerless.
Narrative Thesis
This is a setting designed as if it's intended to be used for a Dreamwidth RP game. It's a crossover jamjar (characters are thrown in like bugs in a jar they can't easily escape from), where players apply to write characters from all types of canons. This creates a melting pot cast full of possibilities. Included in the City's worldbuilding are many of the 'standard' features found in this style of game — a setting-wide (social media) network, regular "events" (trope-y situations applied to the cast), a costly death revival mechanic, and even explanations for the cast ebbing and flowing as though the "playerbase" is fluxuating in and out of the game (or even simply taking hiatuses).
Why? Because of the type of storytelling opportunities it provides. DWRP game settings are designed to be backdrops for players to write out character arcs and interactions they may not be able to find in their home canons. While many games are specialized towards specific types of locations or themes, others are more generalized intended to create a very diverse cast. Those types of settings are therefore designed to be open to as many kinds of shenanigans as players can imagine, creating an experience where your character may have a clique and particular arc, but others have their own happening independently. These storylines can converge and overlap, making the setting feel very alive and dynamic while still having structures familiar to fandom. The result is a variety of character-driven plotlines happening simultaneously in the same setting, which may or may not have its own overarching, driving plot that touches all characters in the game.
The fanfic mala is planning on writing is, effectively, centered on a specific "clique" of characters within this faux game. Opening the rest of the setting up to friends — for cameos or for writing your own stories in, allowing for references to situations happening outside of mala's "clique" — helps recreate that "lived in" feeling. Plus... It's just fun.
The Rift
The Rift Sea encompasses the multiverse. All timelines, all worlds exist within it, connected like islands and continents in a truly eldritch ocean. The Rift answers to no rules but its own. Its currents ebb and flow in strange rhythms, capable of sweeping away anything that slips between the cracks of reality — people, animals, buildings, entire chunks of a city or planet... Nothing is off-limits.
It's possible to traverse the Rift with purpose and direction, and even to successfully land at your chosen destination. However, it's a very complex process, and surviving it intact — physically, mentally, existentially — is no small feat.
